Amazon Lightsail vs EC2: which one do you actually need?
Both run your workload on AWS hardware. Lightsail sells fixed bundles with storage and transfer built into one flat price; EC2 sells raw instances you size and assemble yourself. Here is the practical difference, with real monthly pricing for both.
Pick by how much assembling you want to do
You want one flat price that includes everything
- Websites, blogs, small apps, game servers, VPN endpoints
- SSD storage and a terabyte-class transfer allowance are part of the bundle
- Windows Server bundles available, from $14.25/mo
- Predictable monthly bill, no surprise line items
You want to size the machine precisely
- Pick the exact instance family and size (t3a, t3 and more)
- Volume size, transfer and bandwidth chosen separately, pay for what you spec
- 60 regions available through us, including many Lightsail does not cover
- Better fit for workloads that outgrow fixed bundles
Comparable tiers at our retail pricing
| RAM / vCPU | Lightsail bundle (disk + transfer included) | EC2 instance (disk + transfer separate) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 GB / 2 vCPU | $10/mo (20GB SSD, 1TB out) | t3a.nano from $7/mo |
| 1 GB / 2 vCPU | $14/mo (40GB SSD, 2TB out) | t3a.micro from $14/mo |
| 2 GB / 2 vCPU | $24/mo (60GB SSD, 3TB out) | t3a.small from $27/mo |
| 4 GB / 2 vCPU | $48/mo (80GB SSD, 4TB out) | t3a.medium from $54/mo |
| 8 GB / 2 vCPU | $88/mo (160GB SSD, 5TB out) | t3a.large from $108/mo |
| 16 GB / 4 vCPU | $168/mo (320GB SSD, 6TB out) | t3a.xlarge from $216/mo |
Our retail pricing in USD, August 2026. EC2 prices vary by region ("from" shows the cheapest region we sell) and exclude the volume and data transfer you add as options at checkout; Lightsail bundles include the listed SSD and outbound transfer. IPv6-only Lightsail bundles cost less, from $7.50/mo.
Either way, no AWS account needed
One account, both products
We resell Lightsail and EC2 side by side. Try the bundle, outgrow it, deploy the instance; one balance and one dashboard cover both, along with six other clouds.

Lightsail vs EC2 questions
Is Lightsail cheaper than EC2?
At equal RAM, usually yes once you count what the bundle includes: the Lightsail price already covers SSD storage and a terabyte-class transfer allowance, while an EC2 instance price covers only the compute. EC2 can undercut Lightsail at the very smallest sizes or when you need little storage and transfer.
Do I need an AWS account to use either through Initech?
No. We provision Lightsail and EC2 under our own AWS account and hand you the server credentials. You sign up with an email address, top up your balance with PayPal or crypto, and deploy.
Can I start on Lightsail and move to EC2 later?
Yes. Both live in the same dashboard here, so you can deploy an EC2 instance alongside your Lightsail bundle, migrate your workload on your own schedule, and cancel the old server when you are done.
Does Lightsail really include bandwidth?
Yes. Every Lightsail bundle lists an outbound transfer allowance, from 1TB on the smallest plan up to several terabytes on larger ones. On EC2, transfer is a separate option you choose at checkout.
Which one offers Windows?
Through us, Windows Server ships on Lightsail bundles, from $14.25 per month, with RDP credentials delivered after provisioning. Our EC2 line is Linux. If you want Windows paid in crypto, start with the Lightsail Windows plans.
